About the unit
The Biomedical Engineering Unit is responsible for the safety, availability and performance of medical equipment across government hospitals and the national ambulance fleet.
The unit maintains the national medical equipment inventory, coordinates preventive maintenance schedules and builds the capacity of hospital-based biomedical technicians in every region.
Responsibilities
- Installation, commissioning and acceptance testing of new medical equipment
- Planned preventive maintenance, repair and calibration of hospital and ambulance equipment
- Maintaining the national medical equipment inventory and equipment status reporting
- Setting equipment specifications and advising on procurement and donations
- Decommissioning and safe disposal of obsolete or unsafe equipment
- Training and supervision of hospital biomedical technicians
Key activities
- Quarterly preventive maintenance rounds across regional and district hospitals
- Equipment audits and functionality surveys feeding the national inventory
- Workshop support for oxygen plants, theatre, imaging and laboratory equipment
- Technician refresher training and mentorship attachments
