About the Unit
The Biomedical Engineering Unit is responsible for the availability, safety and performance of medical equipment across Sierra Leone's government health facilities. It operates a central workshop with district satellite teams, maintains the national equipment inventory, and sets the technical standards that govern how devices are installed, used, serviced and retired.
Equipment maintenance
Preventive servicing, corrective repair and calibration of diagnostic, surgical and life-support equipment in government hospitals.
Medical equipment management
A national inventory of equipment, service history and spare-part holdings that informs procurement and replacement planning.
Training programmes
Certification and continuing education for biomedical technicians, and end-user training for clinical staff on safe operation.
Equipment reporting
Facility focal persons log faults using the Equipment Fault Reporting Form; the Unit triages and schedules a response.
Technical guidelines
Standards for installation, electrical safety, decontamination and safe decommissioning of medical devices.
